Roofers Covering Jarrow

High and Dry work across Jarrow, from the streets around the town centre out to Primrose, Monkton and the estates bordering Hebburn and South Shields. Like its neighbours on this stretch of the Tyne, Jarrow's housing is weighted heavily towards the post-war period, and that shapes what we are called out to.

Jarrow's Housing and Its Roofs

Jarrow was a shipbuilding town — Palmers dominated it — and the yards made it a target during the Second World War. Substantial areas were damaged and cleared, and the town was largely rebuilt through the 1950s, 60s and 70s. The practical consequence for roofing is that a great deal of Jarrow's housing stock is roughly the same age, and it is reaching the end of its roof life together.

Concrete tiles at the end of their run

The rebuilt housing was tiled, mostly in concrete interlocking tiles with a working life of about 40 to 60 years. Those are now due. The failure is gradual rather than dramatic: the tile surface wears off, the tile turns porous and starts absorbing water, and it grows heavier and more brittle. Look for a rough pitted texture where the tiles were once smooth, patchy colour and heavy moss growth. Underneath, the bitumen underlay usually fails before the tiles do, tearing at the eaves where it has been exposed.

Whole streets coming due together

Because so much went up at once, Jarrow gets the same effect we see in Washington and Peterlee — several re-roofs on one street in a single year. If your neighbours are having work done and your house was built at the same time, it is worth having yours looked at rather than assuming you are fine.

Flat roofs on garages, porches and dormers

Mid-century estate design used flat roofs liberally. If yours is still original felt it is decades beyond its design life, and felt is the shortest-lived of the flat roof systems at roughly 15 to 20 years. We would normally put EPDM rubber on as the replacement — seamless, flexible in cold weather, and typically 30 to 50 years.

Older pockets near St Paul's

Jarrow is not all post-war. There are older streets, particularly around the historic core near St Paul's, where the housing predates the rebuilding and is slated rather than tiled. Those behave differently — the slate outlasts the nails, so you get the slipping-slate pattern rather than porosity. We will tell you which type you have at survey, because the right answer for one is the wrong answer for the other.

Jarrow Roofing FAQs

Why do so many Jarrow houses need roofs at the same time?

Because much of the town was rebuilt at once. Wartime damage to the shipyard area led to extensive clearance and rebuilding through the 1950s to 70s, and those roofs are hitting the end of their working life together. It is common to see several re-roofs on one street in a year.

What does a worn concrete tile look like?

Rough and pitted where it used to be smooth, faded patchily rather than evenly, and often carrying heavy moss. That means it has gone porous and is holding water rather than shedding it. The underlay beneath has frequently failed before the tiles show it.

Do you replace flat garage and porch roofs?

Yes — there is a lot of flat roofing on Jarrow's mid-century housing. If yours is original felt it is well past its life. EPDM rubber is normally what we would recommend, at roughly 30 to 50 years against felt's 15 to 20.

My house is older than the estates — is it different?

Yes. The older streets, particularly near St Paul's, are slated rather than tiled, and they fail through nail sickness — slates slipping singly as the fixings corrode — rather than through the covering going porous. Different problem, different fix.

Do you cover Hedworth, Boldon Colliery and Fellgate?

Yes, along with Primrose, Monkton, Wardley, Simonside and the areas bordering Hebburn and South Shields.
